User-Manual for!dType

Version 1.0 (19-Jun-05)

!Help file for dType v1.0 19/6/05 - Freeware

!dType allows you to set the filetype of multiple files in one go via recursive drag and drop of any combination of files and directories.

There are two situations that prompted this program:

1) You have a disc where the files are all from a PC (e.g. a downloaded website), but not given a DOS filetype, so DOSMap hasn't done anything. Set them all to DOS with dType and they will then get the correct RISC OS filetype

2) You have transferred a bunch of files between RISC OS machines via a PC or PC-formatted media and lost the filetype information. If all the files are the same they can all be re-filetyped with one drag.

How to use

N.B. Select = Left mouse button, Menu = middle, Adjust = Right

Double-click on !dType in a filer window to load it onto the iconbar. The default filetype is text and the iconbar icon is therefore the one for text, with the hexadecimal code underneath.

Choosing the filetype

1) Click Menu on the iconbar icon and set type just as you would in a Filer window either by entering the three digit hex code, or the corresponding name. The iconbar icon will change to reflect the update.

2) If you can't remember the hex code or name, click Select on the iconbar icon to open the "known types" window

This window displays all the filetypes that have been "seen" by RISC OS since boot up - in graphical, hexadecimal and name form. Simply click on the text to set the type. Again, the iconbar icon will change to match.

Setting the filetype

Simply drag a selection of files and/or directories onto the iconbar icon (or known types window) and all the files, including those in sub-directories, will be set to the currently selected filetype.
Note:

The number of known filetypes changes regularly as new directories are opened and new applications are 'seen' by the filer. For this reason the list of known types is updated every time the iconbar icon is clicked, which may result in a short delay. I've managed to find around 175 filetypes on my hard disc, but I doubt that's a record. In case you're wondering it's d for delta.
